theme song

Frivolous post today. I often play music while I’m writing, but the aim is for the music to fade into the background, so I’ve never really thought of any one song as a theme song. The one exception is Within Temptation’s “Hand of Sorrow”. From the moment I first heard this, way back when IRONBANE was still coming together, I knew this was the perfect song for protagonist Anjen, the war she fought and the things she did to win.

Please forgive me for the sorrow
For leaving you in fear
For the dreams we had to silence
That's all they'll ever be
Still I'll be the hand that serves you
Though you'll not see that it is me

So many dreams were broken and so much was sacrificed
Was it worth the ones we loved and had to leave behind
So many years have past, who are the noble and the wise?
Will all our sins be justified?

  1. I'd never heard of that band before, but I really like them. Thanks for the intro, and yes, I see how that song would fit Ironbane from the teasers I've read. I also listen to music whilst writing, but haven't come across a song that really fits as a theme song for The Wrong Side.

  2. Oh I love that song! Did you know that it was originally based on Robin Hobb's Farseer series? And yes, this totally works for IRONBANE. I actually have quite a few songs for EMPIRE OF LIGHT too - always good to have a writing playlist handy :)

  3. No, I didn't know that! The whole song makes perfect sense from that perspective. What songs do you play when writing EMPIRE OF LIGHT?

  4. Yeah, I think it's pretty cool, I love fantasy-inspired metal :)

Let's see on my playlist right now...

Time Is Running Out/Map of the Problematique/Uprising by Muse
Protege Moi/Running Up That Hill/Taste in Men/Meds by Placebo
    Criminal by Disturbed
    FMLYHM by Seether....

Lots of metal and indie rock work for EMOPIRE OF LIGHT, also trying to pick a song for a potential book trailer :)

  5. Squee! I love this song! And so many others by WT, for that matter. *happy smile* I've actually a story idea spawned by it (don't worry, even though I've not read the works it was based on, I'm sure my idea's different)! Not that I'm actively writing the story atm, but anyway…

I actually have a WiP where the narrator starts singing "Our Solemn Hour". That may never be able to get licensed, but anywho. It's my right to do as I want in the first draft.

Have you heard "I Am the Only One" or "Sleep Well, My Angel" by We Are the Fallen yet? Those fit two of my characters exactly.

Oh, I found your blog thanks to your bashing bad boys like Patch. And I'm subscribing. *grin*
